ASTM A240 Type 316L Material plate Specification
What is ASTM A240 material specification?
ASTM A240 specification covers stainless steel plates, sheets and strips for pressure vessels and general applications. This specification covers chemical composition and mechanical properties for various grades of ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, duplex, super duplex and high moly stainless steel alloys.
What is ASTM A240 316L material?
ASTM A240 Type 316L is a low-carbon chromium or chromium-nickel stainless steel plate specification that resists most common corrosive environments. It is durable and resistant to high temperatures, and complies with ASTM A240 standards, making it suitable for high-pressure applications. ASME SA240 Grade 316L plate has an extremely high melting point of 1400°C and can withstand temperatures up to 870°C in intermittent service and 925°C in continuous service. It can be used in high-temperature equipment such as heaters, superheaters, heat exchangers, and condensers.

Chemical Composition (ASTM A240 316L)
316L stainless steel is a low-carbon version of 316, designed to provide superior corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides and acidic environments.
| Element | Composition (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.03 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.0 – 18.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 10.0 – 14.0 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 2.0 – 3.0 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.0 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.0 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
Mechanical Properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | ≥ 485 MPa |
| Yield Strength (0.2% offset) | ≥ 170 MPa |
| Elongation | ≥ 40% |
| Hardness (Brinell) | ≤ 217 HB |
What is the difference between SA 240 316 and 316L?
A240 316L stainless steel sheet contains lower carbon and owned a better corrosion resistance than SA240 316 stainless steel plate. However A240 316L stainless steel plate does not require post weld annealing when rolling.
What is the yield strength of A240 316L Cold Rolled Sheet?
One of these difference lies in the tensile strength. The minimum tensile strength of 316L stainless steel plate is 70 ksi. The yield strength at 0.2% is 25 ksi. 316L stainless steel has an elongation of 40%, a hardness of 217 on the Brinell scale and a 95 on the Rockwell B scale.
What is the hardness of ASTM A240 Type 316L sheets?
ASTM A240 Type 316L stainless steel has a maximum hardness of 217 HBW (Brinell Hardness) or 95 HRB (Rockwell B scale). The hardness is not a fixed value but a maximum limit, and the actual hardness can vary depending on the specific mill and the cold working process applied to the material.
