ASTM A403 Wrought Stainless Steel Piping Fittings.pdf

What is ASTM A403 Stainless Steel Piping Fittings?

ASTM A403 is the standard specification for wrought stainless steel piping fittings intended for pressure piping applications. It covers common product forms such as elbows, tees, concentric and eccentric reducers, caps, and crosses. The standard applies to a wide range of stainless steel grades (including 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, and duplex steel S32205). These fittings are produced via forging, machining, or other wrought manufacturing processes and must undergo appropriate solution-annealing heat treatment.

What are the equivalent materials for ASTM A403 stainless steel?

ASTM A403 is the specification for wrought stainless steel pipe fittings rather than a single material grade, so its equivalent materials depend on the UNS grade inside this standard. The widely used A403 WP304 (S30400) matches EN 1.4301 / X5CrNi18‑10; A403 WP304L (S30403) corresponds to EN 1.4307 / X2CrNi18‑9; A403 WP316L (S31603) is equivalent to EN 1.4404 / X2CrNiMo17‑12‑2. Duplex grade A403 WP2205 (S32205) aligns with EN 1.4462 / X2CrNiMoN22‑5‑3.

What are the differences between ASTM A403 and ASTM A182?

Both ASTM A403 and ASTM A182 are widely used for stainless steel pressure piping components, though they apply to different product categories. ASTM A403 covers wrought stainless steel pipe fittings-such as elbows, tees, reducers, and caps-and includes grades like WP304L, WP316L, and WP2205. It mandates Positive Material Identification (PMI), dimensional inspection, and solution annealing, and is applicable to pressure classes ranging from Class 150 to Class 2500. In contrast, ASTM A182 governs forged or rolled stainless steel flanges, fittings, valves, and parts-designated with "F" series grades such as F304L, F316L, and F51-with a primary focus on forged blanks and flange geometry.
