EN 1.4550 Vs 1.4961 Stainless Steel: Material Equivalents
Leave a message
When selecting stainless steel for high-temperature or welded process systems, understanding the technical and standard differences between grades is essential. Two commonly referenced European materials are EN 1.4550 (AISI 347) and EN 1.4961 (X10CrNiNb18-9).
This article compares EN 1.4550 vs 1.4961, covers their international equivalents, and helps procurement teams make informed sourcing decisions based on temperature, pressure, and fabrication requirements.
What is the equivalent material of EN 1.4550 stainless steel?
EN 1.4550, also known as X6CrNiNb18-10 or AISI 347, is a niobium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel designed to resist intergranular corrosion during welding or long-term thermal exposure.
| Standard | Equivalent Grade |
|---|---|
| AISI/ASTM | 347 / UNS S34700 |
| JIS | SUS347 |
| GB | 0Cr18Ni11Nb |
| Werkstoff | W.Nr. 1.4550 |
What is the equivalent material of EN 1.4691 stainless steel?
EN 1.4961 (X10CrNiNb18-9) is a high-temperature version of niobium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel, with higher carbon content, designed for service in power generation and thermal cyclic systems.
| Standard | Equivalent Grade |
|---|---|
| Werkstoff | W.Nr. 1.4961 |
| DIN (former) | X10CrNiNb18-9 |
| ASTM close match | No exact AISI equivalent, similar to 347H or 316H in performance |
| Nuclear spec | Often qualified under VdTÜV 504 or RCC-M standards |

What is the difference between EN 1.4550 and 1.4961 stainless steel?
EN 1.4550 (AISI 347) and EN 1.4961 (X10CrNiNb18-9) are both niobium-stabilized austenitic stainless steels, but their main differences are high temperature performance and carbon content.
1.4550 stainless steel has a lower carbon content (≤0.08%) and is suitable for welded structures. It is often used in pressure vessels and heat exchanger systems with a maximum operating temperature of about 850°C.
1.4961 stainless steel has a higher carbon content (0.08–0.12%) and has better creep strength and thermal cycling stability. It is suitable for gas turbines, nuclear power plants and extreme high temperature environments up to 950°C.
We offer both EN 1.4550 and 1.4961 in standard product forms including tubes, pipes, plates, strips, sheets, round bars, flat bars, forgings, hexagonal bars and wires, backed by EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificates. These products are available in a wide variety of sizes.
