What Is SUS304L Stainless Steel?
SUS304L Stainless Steel is the Japanese JIS standard equivalent of AISI 304L, a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel. The "L" stands for "Low Carbon," typically ≤0.03%, which improves its weldability and resistance to intergranular corrosion.
SUS304L is widely used in the chemical industry, food processing, pressure vessels, and architectural applications due to its excellent balance of strength, formability, and corrosion resistance.

How about the corrosion resistance of SUS304L?
SUS304L stainless steel, a low-carbon austenitic grade (C ≤ 0.03%), offers excellent corrosion resistance due to its reduced carbon content, which suppresses intergranular corrosion. It resists chromium depletion at grain boundaries after welding, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing. In neutral and mildly acidic media, its corrosion rate is less than 0.05 mm/year, comparable to SUS304. In chloride-containing environments, its stress corrosion resistance is improved by approximately 15%, and its pitting resistance can be further enhanced through electrolytic polishing. Thanks to its strong weldability and stable corrosion performance, SUS304L is widely used in clean environments such as food processing equipment and chemical piping systems.
SUS304L Mechanical Properties
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (MPa) | ≥ 485 |
| Yield Strength (0.2% MPa) | ≥ 170 |
| Elongation (%) | ≥ 40 |
| Hardness (HRB) | ≤ 90 |
SUS304L maintains excellent ductility and toughness, even in cryogenic conditions, making it a popular choice in piping, pressure vessels, and tanks.

Is SUS304L stainless steel magnetic?
No, SUS304L is non-magnetic in the annealed state but may become slightly magnetic after cold working.
SUS304L Weldability and Fabrication
SUS304L can be easily welded using TIG, MIG or arc welding, and no post-weld heat treatment is required. It is also easy to form and suitable for deep drawing, bending and cold working.
Can SUS304L be used for marine environments?
While SUS304L has some chloride resistance, SUS316L is recommended for better durability in saltwater applications.
If your application requires strong corrosion resistance, good weldability, and cost-effectiveness, SUS304L is a reliable material. It is widely available, easily fabricated, and suitable for a range of industrial and commercial applications.
We supply certified SUS304L stainless steel in various forms (sheets, coils, tubes, bars) with mill test reports (MTR) and custom processing options.
