What is 1.4305 material equivalent to?

What is 1.4305 material?

1.4305 is a European (EN) designation for a type of stainless steel also known as AISI 303. It is an austenitic stainless steel renowned for its excellent machinability due to the addition of sulfur. While this makes it easy to machine, it does slightly reduce the material's corrosion resistance and toughness compared to other austenitic grades like 304.

What is 1.4305 material equivalent to?

1.4305 stainless steel is equivalent to AISI 303, also known as 303S31 and X8CrNiS18-9. It's an austenitic stainless steel known for its good machinability due to added sulfur. This material is often used in machining applications.

Corrosion resistance
Stainless steel AISI 303 (1.4305 / X8CrNiS18-9) has a medium corrosion resistance (PREN value = 17.0 – 20.7 ), its chromium-nickel matrix (17-19% chromium, 8-10% nickel) forms a passive oxide layer that protects against everyday wear, ensuring long-term durability in applications such as food processing equipment, building hardware, and general machinery parts.

Welding
Due to the addition of sulfur, the stainless steel AISI 303 / BS 303S31 has poor welding properties. If possible, this material should not be welded, as this can lead to the formation of hot cracks.

Machinability
AISI 303 stainless steel is a popular austenitic stainless steel with excellent machinability and reliable corrosion resistance, making it suitable for general industrial applications. Improved chip formation and reduced tool wear make it an ideal choice for high-precision machining such as turning, milling, and threading.

Heat treatment and hot forming
Solution annealing (+AT) (cooling by air or water): 1000 - 1100 °C
Hot forming (cooling by air): 900 - 1200 °C

Which is better for corrosion resistance, 303 or 304?

While AISI 303 isn't as corrosion-resistant as AISI 304 (because sulfur reduces the nickel equivalent), it excels in applications that require ease of machining but don't require extreme corrosion resistance. For example, it outperforms 304 in high-speed machining operations, reducing production time and costs in non-corrosive environments without sacrificing performance.
