It maintains structural and dimensional stability during repeated cryogenic to 450°C thermal cycles from Clean-in-Place (CIP) and Sterilize-in-Place (SIP) operations, and demonstrates robust resistance to premature degradation when exposed to common sanitizers, organic acids, and saline solutions.

What is the difference between ASTM A270 and A554?

ASTM A270 and A554 are specifications for stainless steel tubing, but they serve completely different purposes. A270 is a sanitary/hygienic specification designed for food, dairy, and pharmaceutical processing. A554 is a mechanical specification used for structural, ornamental, and decorative applications (such as handrails and exhaust pipes).

 

What is the difference between A270 and A269?

A270 falls under sanitary-grade specifications, requiring highly polished internal and external surfaces to prevent contamination in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications; in contrast, A269 is a general-service standard that focuses primarily on mechanical integrity and corrosion resistance, with relatively lower requirements for surface quality.

 

Which is better for sanitary-grade piping: 316 or 316L?
In the vast majority of cases, 316L is the better and more commonly used choice.
The reason: The "L" stands for "Low Carbon." During welding, 316L effectively prevents "intergranular corrosion" (corrosion caused by carbide precipitation). Sanitary piping systems often require extensive on-site welding, and 316L ensures that the corrosion resistance of the weld zone matches that of the pipe itself.
