What is the ASTM A484 specification?
ASTM A484 is a standard specification established by ASTM International that sets forth the general basic requirements for wrought stainless steel bars, billets, shapes, and forgings. It covers wrought stainless steel bars, shapes, and forgings-as well as billets or other semi-finished materials intended for forging (excluding wire)-produced under the latest revisions of the following ASTM specifications: A276, A314, A458, A473, A477, A479/A479M, A564/A564M, A565/A565M, A582/A582M, A638/A638M, A705/A705M, and A831/A831M.
Scope: Applies to semi-finished and finished stainless steel products intended for structural or mechanical use.
Material Conditions: Products can be supplied as:
Hot-worked
Hot-worked and annealed
Hot-worked, annealed, and cold-worked
Hot-worked, annealed, and heat-treated
Heat Treatment: Austenitic and austenitic-ferritic grades must be solution annealed with proper quenching and rapid cooling.
Chemical Composition: Requires conformance to specified limits for elements like C, Cr, Ni, Mo, Si, Mn, N, and others depending on grade.
Referenced Standards: Supports specifications such as A276 (bars), A479 (boiler tubes), A564 (age-hardening bars).
Units: Available in both inch-pound and SI (metric) units; the order determines which applies.
Permitted Variations in Size of Hot-Finished Round, Turned and Square Bars
A :Turned bars are generally available from 2 to 25 in. [50 to 625 mm] in diameter, over 8 in. [200 mm] only turned bars are available.
B :Out-of-round is the difference between the maximum and minimum diameters of the bar measured at the same cross section.
C :Out-of-square section is the difference in the two dimensions at the same cross section of a square bar, each dimension being the distance between opposite faces. D Size tolerances have not been evolved for round sections in the size range of 5⁄16 in. [8.00 mm] to approximately 5⁄8 in. [15.5 mm] in diameter which are produced on rod mills in coils.
