What is the difference between 316 seamless pipe and ERW pipe?

What is AISI 316 stainless steel seamless pipe?

AISI 316 stainless steel seamless pipe is a hollow long steel product manufactured from austenitic stainless steel (AISI 316) without any welded seams during the production process. It offers outstanding corrosion resistance, high-temperature stability, and mechanical strength, allowing continuous service at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C) and intermittent service at temperatures below 1600°F (871°C). It is widely used in chemical processing, petroleum, food processing, medical equipment, marine engineering, heat exchangers, and pharmaceutical industries.

The typical price range of AISI 316 stainless steel seamless pipes is approximately US$1,800–4,500 per ton, depending on factors such as specifications, wall thickness, surface finish, and order quantity. Standard stock products can usually be delivered within 7–15 working days, while customized products generally require approximately 15–45 days for production and shipment.

What Is ASTM 316 Stainless Steel ERW Pipe?

AISI 316 Stainless Steel ERW Pipe is a stainless steel welded pipe manufactured using the electric resistance welding (ERW) process. During production, stainless steel strip is formed into a round tubular shape, and high-frequency electrical current generates resistance heat to melt the pipe edges, which are then pressure welded together to form the weld seam. This manufacturing method offers high production efficiency, lower cost, and controllable weld quality, making it highly suitable for large-scale production. However, the weld seam area may present a slight risk of localized corrosion, which can be minimized through solution annealing treatment or by selecting matching welding filler materials to ensure optimal corrosion resistance.

What is the difference between 316 seamless pipe and ERW pipe?

316 seamless pipe is manufactured by piercing a solid billet, offering higher pressure resistance, uniformity, and enhanced corrosion resistance with no seam line. In contrast, 316 ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipe is formed by longitudinally welding steel coils, making it more cost-effective but generally better suited for lower-pressure, less critical applications.

316 Seamless Pipe vs. ERW Pipe: Key Differences

Feature 316 Seamless (SMLS) pipe 316 ERW (Welded) pipe
Manufacturing Process Produced from a solid stainless steel billet that is heated and pierced into a hollow tube. Produced from a flat steel strip/coil that is cold-formed into a cylinder and welded using high-frequency induction.
Weld Seam No seam. Completely continuous structure across the cross-section. Longitudinal seam. A weld line runs the entire length of the pipe.
Pressure Capacity Higher. No weak points in the structure; handles extreme high-pressure and vacuum. Lower. Generally rated at 85%–100% of the strength of seamless due to the "Weld Joint Efficiency Factor."
Size Availability Outer Diameter typically 6–830 mm; Wall Thickness 0.5–60 mm. Available up to Φ1420 mm (particularly via spiral welding); however, 316 ERW pipes are most commonly found in small to medium diameters.
Production Length Limited by the extrusion machine capacity (usually shorter). Can be produced in very long continuous lengths from coils.
Lead Time & Cost Longer lead time and Higher cost (approx. 25-40% more expensive). Shorter lead time and Lower cost due to high-speed automated production.
Common Standards ASTM A312, ASTM A213, ASTM A269. ASTM A312 (Welded), ASTM A249, ASTM A554.

316 Seamless Pipe vs. ERW Pipe: Which to Choose?

SS 316 Seamless (SMLS) pipe is suitable for highly demanding environments such as high-pressure pipelines in the petrochemical industry, boiler tubes, hydraulic systems, offshore engineering, and nuclear energy equipment.
SS 316 ERW pipe is suitable for cost-effective applications such as low-pressure fluid transport (water, gas), structural construction, and general chemical piping.

316 Seamless Pipe vs. ERW Pipe: Price

The price of 316 seamless pipe is typically higher than that of 316 ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipe; due to a more complex manufacturing process and superior pressure resistance, its cost is often 20% to 30% higher. The unit price for seamless pipe (ASTM A312 TP316) typically ranges from $6,595 to $8,245 per ton, whereas the unit price for ERW pipe and other welded piping materials falls between $4,200 and $7,695 per ton.
