What is the difference between S31603 and S31600?

What is S31600 material?
Type 316 (UNS 31600) is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel alloy containing molybdenum. This addition increases corrosion resistance, improves resistance to pitting chloride ion solutions and provides increased strength at elevated temperatures.

What is S31603 material?

Alloy 316/316L (UNS S31600/ S31603) is a chromium-nickel- molybdenum austenitic stainless steel developed to provide improved corrosion resistance to Alloy 304/304L in moderately corrosive environments. It is often utilized in process streams containing chlorides or halides.

AISI 316 vs 316L Stainless Steel (UNS S31603)

AISI 316 and 316L stainless steels are both molybdenum (Mo)-containing austenitic stainless steels. The main differences between AISI 316 and 316L stainless steels lie in their carbon content, weldability, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties.

Carbon Content: AISI 316 (UNS S31600) has a maximum carbon content of 0.08%, while AISI 316L (UNS S31603) strictly limits carbon content to below 0.03%.

Weldability: The ultra-low carbon 316L offers superior weldability, eliminating the need for post-weld heat treatment to avoid intergranular corrosion risks.

Corrosion Resistance: Due to its extremely low carbon content, 316L demonstrates more reliable resistance to intergranular corrosion in the welded state or sensitive environments, making it particularly suitable for harsh conditions where post-weld heat treatment is not feasible.

International Standards: AISI 316/316L corresponds to the American material system (AISI/SUS), where SUS 316/SUS 316L are the Japanese standard designations.
