what is the meaning of sus304 stainless steel?

What is SUS 304 stainless steel?

SUS304 stainless steel is 304 stainless steel, which is austenitic stainless steel, containing chromium and nickel, corrosion-resistant and easy to process. It is widely used in chemical, food, medical and other fields.

SUS304 stainless steel is the material standard of Japan. 304 stainless steel is a stainless steel grade produced according to the American ASTM standard. SUS304 is equivalent to my country's (0Cr18Ni9) stainless steel.

Can SUS304 and SS304 be used interchangeably?
In general scenarios, they can be used interchangeably, but it is necessary to ensure that they meet the certification requirements of the target market (such as EN 1.4301 for export to the EU).

Which one is more expensive, SUS304 or SS304?
The prices are similar for the same specifications, but SS304 may be slightly more expensive if it contains additional certifications (such as ASME).

SUS304 stainless steel corrosion resistance
It has excellent corrosion resistance to the atmosphere, water, weak acid and alkali (such as food processing environment), which is better than ordinary carbon steel. Through solution treatment (quenching at 1010-1150℃), intergranular chromium deficiency is eliminated to avoid welding corrosion.

SUS304 stainless steel processing performance
It has good ductility, is easy to stamp, bend and weld, and is suitable for complex shape manufacturing.
It is non-magnetic (it may be slightly magnetic after cold processing).

SUS304 stainless steel high temperature resistance
The short-term use temperature can reach 870℃, and the long-term working temperature is ≤538℃, which is better than 304L (low carbon version).

SUS304 stainless steel heat treatment process
Solution treatment: Generally, SUS304 is heated to between 1010℃-1150℃, kept warm for a certain period of time, and then quickly cooled, usually by water cooling or air cooling. Solution treatment can fully dissolve the alloy elements in austenite, eliminate stress and cold working hardening, and improve the corrosion resistance and toughness of steel.
Stabilization treatment: For some SUS304 materials that have been cold-worked or used in the sensitization temperature range, stabilization treatment may be required. The temperature of stabilization treatment is generally between 850℃-950℃, and the holding time depends on the specific situation. Through stabilization treatment, the carbides in the steel can be fully dissolved and redistributed, reducing the sensitivity to intergranular corrosion.

What is the difference between SUS304 and SUS316 stainless steel?

SUS304 (18Cr-8Ni) is a general-purpose austenitic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance and processing performance, suitable for daily necessities, architectural decoration and other common scenes; while SUS316 (17Cr-12Ni-2Mo) adds 2-3% molybdenum, which significantly enhances the resistance to chloride ion corrosion (such as seawater, acidic environment) and high temperature resistance, and is often used in harsh environments such as medical equipment, marine engineering and chemical storage tanks. Both are non-magnetic, but SUS316 has a higher cost of molybdenum and does not require additional heat treatment after welding, so its overall performance is better.

Application of SUS304 stainless steel
SUS304 is widely used in food, chemical, atomic energy and other industrial equipment and decoration fields as well as household goods, cabinets, indoor pipelines, water heaters, boilers, bathtubs, auto parts, medical equipment, building materials, chemistry, food industry, agriculture, and ship parts.
