what is UNS S31803 material equivalent?

What is uns S31803?

UNS S31803 is a widely used duplex stainless steel, also known as 2205 (SAF 2205) or EN 1.4462. It is characterized by a mixed ferrite and austenite microstructure, combining high mechanical strength (equivalent to that of two austenitic stainless steels) with excellent corrosion resistance, particularly against pitting and stress corrosion cracking. Therefore, it is ideally suited for demanding environments such as the oil and gas, chemical, and marine industries.

what is UNS S31803 material equivalent?

UNS S31803, commonly known as Duplex 2205, is a widely used duplex stainless steel with key equivalents including UNS S32205, ASTM A182 F51/F60, and EN 1.4462, offering high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, largely interchangeable in practice despite minor composition nuances between S31803 and S32205.

What are the differences between UNS S32205 and UNS S31803?
UNS S32205 (ASTM A182 F60) is a higher-grade version of 2205 duplex stainless steel, with its chemical composition controlled to the upper end of the S31803 range, typically 22–23% Cr, 3.0–3.5% Mo, and 0.14–0.20% N, to enhance resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in corrosive chloride environments. UNS S31803, on the other hand, allows for a wider range of compositions (21–23% Cr, 2.5–3.5% Mo, 0.08–0.20% N, PREN ≈ 35–40).

What are the differences between UNS S31803 and 316?
UNS S31803 (2205 duplex stainless steel, approximately 22% Cr, 5–6% Ni, 3% Mo, PREN ≈ 35–40) has a yield strength of ≥ 450 MPa and exhibits superior resistance to chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking compared to UNS S31600 (316 stainless steel, approximately 17% Cr, 10–14% Ni, 2–3% Mo, PREN ≈ 23–26, yield strength ≥ 205 MPa). However, 316 stainless steel has better formability and is non-magnetic.

UNS S31803 vs. F51
UNS S31803 and ASTM A182 F51 are the same material – F51 is the ASTM standard designation for UNS S31803 (EN 1.4462, 2205 duplex stainless steel), therefore they have the same composition, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance.
