329 S32900 1.4460 stainless steel

1.4460 AISI 329 is a stainless, acid-resistant, duplex steel with improved machinability. Since the steel's machinability has been improved, it is suitable for producing details with comprehensive machinability. The steel has very good corrosion resistance, especially in chlorine-containing environments, and has additional resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue. It also has high strength and toughness.

Corrosion resistance
329 has a Pitting Resistance Equivalency (PRE) ≥31.

329 has very good resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride environments. Due to the high chromium content and alloying with molybdenum, this grade also has good resistance to general corrosion in acidic media.

Microstructure
In solution annealed and quenched conditions, Sanmac 329 has an austenitic-ferritic microstructure, free of grain boundary carbides and intermetallic phases. Ferrite content is 55 – 75%.

Good machinability, weldability and formability
1.4460 can be welded without using welding consumables similar to the parent body. Steel should be welded to an austenitic material with the lowest possible heat input. It can be cold formed and hot formed. This steel is easier to machine, has significantly better workability, but is slightly less corrosion resistant than 1.4462.

annealing
Parts should be solution annealed between 1870/2010ºF (1020/1100ºC) and water quenching. Approximately equal amounts of austenite and delta ferrite will be formed after solution annealing.

Processability
This grade is difficult to machine, probably more difficult to machine than regular 18/8 austenitic. The machinability index of Type 309 is only about 50% of that of Type 316. It is recommended to use the best machines and tools to machine parts made from this grade.
