EN 10088-2 1.4462 Duplex Stainless Steel Plate

What is en 10088-2 material grade?

EN 10088-2 is a European standard specifying technical delivery conditions for stainless steel sheet, plate, and strip used in general purposes, primarily for corrosion resistance. It covers austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and precipitation-hardening grades.

EN 10088-2 1.4462 (X2CrNiMoN 22-5-3) duplex stainless steel available as medium-to-heavy plates and coils features a balanced 50:50 ferrite-austenite microstructure. It possesses a yield strength of ≥450 MPa approximately double that of standard austenitic stainless steels-and a tensile strength ranging between 640 and 840 MPa. With a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) consistently above 35, it demonstrates exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting in harsh environments containing chloride ions and hydrogen sulfide.

GNEE supplies mill-certified 2205 plates ranging in thickness from 3 mm to 100 mm, with widths reaching up to 3000 mm. Surface finishes include No. 1 and 2B, and material certificates compliant with EN 10204 standards (3.1 or 3.2) are provided with every shipment. This material is widely utilized in high-specification sectors such as petrochemicals, offshore engineering, and pressure vessel manufacturing.

1.4462 Stainless Steel Plate: Processing and Manufacturing

Manufacturing Method: Available in two forms: hot-rolled (better suited for heavy-duty applications) and cold-rolled (featuring a superior surface finish, suitable for decorative or structural purposes).
Heat Treatment: Undergoes a solution annealing process, involving heating to approximately 1100°C followed by rapid cooling to preserve an optimal microstructure.
Processing Limitations: Susceptible to embrittlement within the temperature range of 600°C to 900°C; therefore, strict cooling controls must be implemented.
Machining: Due to the material's high strength, cutting speeds are approximately 20% slower than those used for 304 stainless steel; machining requires the use of sharp, heavy-duty cutting tools accompanied by a high-volume flow of lubricant-coolant.

1.4462 Duplex Stainless Steel vs.1.4404

1.4462 (Duplex 2205) is a high-strength austenitic-ferritic stainless steel; compared to 1.4404 (316L), its yield strength is approximately 150% higher, and it exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance particularly against chlorides, pitting, and stress corrosion cracking. Although 1.4404 offers superior ductility and is easier to bend, weld, and form, 1.4462 clearly holds the advantage when subjected to heavy loads or corrosive environments.

1.4462 Duplex Stainless Steel Plate Applications

Oil and Gas Industry: Commonly used for subsea equipment, production tubing, pipelines, separators, and storage tanks.
Chemical and Petrochemical Processing: Suitable for high-pressure storage tanks, heat exchangers, evaporators, and pressure vessels.
Marine and Seawater Environments: Seawater desalination plants, shipbuilding, and ship cargo tanks.
Pulp and Paper Industry: Widely applied in digesters, bleaching equipment, and stock preparation machinery.

For the high-performance material EN 10088-2 1.4462 (2205 Duplex Stainless Steel), GNEE typically provides comprehensive delivery solutions that fully comply with international export standards.

1. Lead Time

Stock Inventory: For standard specifications (thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 30mm, standard sheet dimensions), dispatch is typically completed within 3–7 business days (including time for surface cleaning, basic cutting, and loading).
Custom Processing: For orders involving special dimensions (e.g., extra-wide plates >3000mm, extra-thick plates >100mm) or specific surface finishes (e.g., polishing, sandblasting), the lead time is typically 10–15 business days.

2. Testing & Quality Assurance Services

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is provided for medium-to-thick plates, conducted in accordance with EN 10160 or ASTM A578 standards to ensure the absence of internal inclusions or laminations.
Corrosion Testing: Per client requirements, ASTM G48 Pitting Corrosion Tests or ASTM A262 Practice E Intergranular Corrosion Tests can be performed.
Dimensional Accuracy: Laser thickness gauges and precision levels are utilized to verify thickness tolerances, flatness, and surface irregularities.

3. Packaging Methods

Surface Protection: Plate surfaces can be covered with double-sided laser protective film or blue film (PVC/PE) to prevent scratching; interleaving paper may also be placed between plates.
Wooden Pallets/Wooden Crates: These are fumigated (bearing the IPPC mark) to ensure suitability for international shipping and are designed for easy handling via forklift.
Steel Frame Supports: For oversized, extra-thick, or heavy plates, channel steel frames are used for reinforcement to prevent deformation during transit.
