Heat Treatment Of SUS410 SUS410J Stainless Steel Bars

SUS410 martensitic stainless steel has a high carbon content (≤0.15%), high strength and wear resistance, but medium corrosion resistance.
SUS410J martensitic stainless steel (such as SUS410J1 containing Mo, SUS410J2 containing Ti), has better corrosion resistance and high temperature performance than SUS410.
SUS410 410J heat treatment
1. Solution treatment (quenching)
Purpose: dissolve carbides, form a single martensitic structure, and improve hardness.
Temperature:
SUS410: 950~1000℃ (keep warm for 1~2 hours).
SUS410J: 1000~1050℃ (higher temperature is required to dissolve Mo/Ti carbides).
Cooling: oil cooling or water cooling (rapid cooling to prevent pearlite formation).
2. Tempering treatment
Purpose: eliminate quenching stress and adjust the balance between hardness and toughness.
Temperature range:
Low temperature tempering (150~250℃): maintain high hardness (HRC 40~50), suitable for cutting tools and bearings.
Medium temperature tempering (350~500℃): hardness HRC 30~40, improve impact resistance.
High temperature tempering (500~700℃): hardness HRC 20~30, improve processability and corrosion resistance.

What to do if SUS410 is not hard enough after heat treatment?
Check whether the quenching temperature is too low (needs to be ≥950℃), or the cooling speed is too slow (oil cooling is recommended).
Can SUS410J be welded?
Preheating (200~300℃) is required before welding, and tempering is performed after welding to eliminate stress. It is recommended to use E410 welding wire.
How to improve the corrosion resistance of SUS410?
Choose SUS410J model (including Mo/Ti), or perform surface chrome plating.
