410 Stainless Steel Properties

As a martensitic stainless steel, low carbon steel, when tempered 410 has good hardness and high toughness. To be technically classified a 410 stainless steel it needs to contain a minimum of 11.5 percent chromium. This property, as well as because of its strength and durability, makes 410 stainless have an overall good corrosion resistance.

Features 410 Stainless Steel

• It is magnetic in both annealed and hardened conditions.
• When heated in different ways an extensive array of properties develop.
• Shows great corrosion resistance to acids: nitric acid, sulfuric acid, etc.

Heat Treatments of 410 Stainless Steel

• Annealing:

Heat slowly to 1500-1650°F (816-899°C), cool to 1100°F (593°C) in furnace, air cool.

• Process Annealing:

Heat to 1350-1450°F (732-788°C), air cool.

• Hardening:

Heat to 1700-1850°F (927 - 1010°C), air cool or oil quench.

Follow by stress relief or temper.

• High Temperature Tempering:

Heat to 1100 - 1400°F (593 - 760°C) for 1 to 4 hours, air cool.

• Low Temperature Tempering:

Heat to 300 - 500°F (150 - 260°C) for 0.5 to 1 hours, air cool.

 

Applications of 410 Stainless Steel
If you desire a steel that has moderate corrosion resistance and high mechanical properties, 410 is the ideal grade to select. Most likely you will find 410 stainless used in kitchen utensils and hand tools applications, steam, and gas turbine parts, as well as in basic nuts, bolts, and screws.
