SS 316 and SS 410 composition difference

If you are comparing SS 316 and SS 410 composition, the most important difference is the alloying system: 316 is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel, while 410 is a chromium-based martensitic stainless steel with much lower nickel and no intentional molybdenum addition.

This difference in chemical composition explains why 316 is generally better for corrosion resistance and chloride-containing environments, while 410 can achieve substantially higher hardness and strength after heat treatment. For engineers and buyers selecting stainless steel pipe, tube, bar or other products, understanding the composition is essential before comparing price or mechanical properties.

SS 316 vs. SS 410 composition difference

Chromium content is a significant factor that contributes to the corrosion-resistant nature of 410 and 316 stainless steel. For example, the chromium content in stainless steel 316 is around 16 to 18%, whereas the chromium content in SS 410 chemical composition is only 11.5 to 13.5%.

Element SS 316 SS 410
Family Austenitic Martensitic
Chromium (Cr) 16.0-18.0% 11.5-13.5%
Nickel (Ni) 10.0-14.0% -
Molybdenum (Mo) 2.0-3.0% -
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.08% ≤ 0.15%

316 is austenitic: nickel and molybdenum stabilize the face-centered cubic structure and add pitting resistance. 410 is martensitic: higher carbon and no nickel allow hardening by heat treatment.

SS 316 vs. SS 410 Mechanical Properties (Annealed Reference)

Property SS 316 SS 410
Tensile strength ≥ 515 MPa 448-655 MPa
Yield strength ≥ 205 MPa ≥ 207 MPa
Elongation ≥ 40% ≥ 20%
Hardenable by heat treatment No Yes (up to ~HRC 40+)

In the quenched and tempered condition, 410 can reach much higher strength and hardness, which is why it suits wear and cutting applications. 316 delivers consistently high ductility and toughness across a wide temperature range.

SS 316 vs. SS 410 Corrosion Resistance

316 offers superior general, pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, especially in chloride and marine environments, thanks to its higher chromium, nickel and molybdenum. 410 has adequate corrosion resistance for mild, dry environments but is not recommended for seawater, strong acids or highly corrosive media.

SS 316 vs. SS 410 Cost Considerations

410 is generally more economical than 316 because it contains no nickel and less chromium. Products made of 410 therefore meet moderate corrosion and strength requirements at lower cost, while 316 is preferred for highly corrosive environments where its higher cost is justified by service life.

Which is stronger, 316 or 410?

In the annealed condition their tensile strengths are similar; in the quenched and tempered condition 410 can be significantly harder and stronger.

Is 410 cheaper than 316?

Yes,Grade 410 is a basic martensitic stainless steel composed primarily of iron and chromium, containing no expensive nickel or molybdenum. Lower raw material costs and a simpler alloy composition give Grade 410 a cost advantage.

Which is better stainless steel 316 or stainless steel 410?

Both SS 316 and SS 410 grades have their corrosion resistance and strength properties to meet the requirements of industries. However, industries and contractors need to choose the right type of material and stainless steel grade based on the job site environment. Every stainless steel grade has different properties and sets of advantages and disadvantages that suit a particular environment; therefore, which stainless steel is better will depend entirely on the site where you want to use the stainless steel.
