ASTM A358 CL1 TP316L Stainless Steel Welded Pipe For High Temperature Service

ASTM A358 standard stands for the American Society for Testing and Materials, which develops standards for a wide range of materials and products. A358 specifically addresses electric fusion welded (EFW) stainless steel pipe for corrosive or high-temperature applications.


ASTM A358 CL1 TP316L stainless steel welded pipe is an EFW pipe made from austenitic stainless steel (grade 316L). Its low carbon content enhances weldability and corrosion resistance, making it particularly suitable for chloride environments. CL1 is the designation for Class 1 in the A358 standard. Class 1 covers pipes welded on both sides using a full penetration welding process. These pipes are capable of withstanding high internal pressures. As a Class 1 pipe in accordance with ASTM A358, all welds are welded on both sides using filler metal and undergo comprehensive radiographic inspection.

ASTM A358 TP316L Welded Pipe Grades
Class 1 - Pipe shall be welded on both sides using filler metal for all weld passes and shall be fully radiographically inspected.
Class 2 - Pipe shall be welded on both sides using filler metal for all weld passes. Radiographic inspection is not required.
Class 3 - Pipe shall be welded on one side using filler metal for all weld passes and shall be fully radiographically inspected.
Class 4 - Same as Class 3, but filler metal may not be added to weld passes exposed on the inside of the pipe.
Class 5 - Pipe shall be welded on both sides using filler metal for all weld passes and shall be spot radiographically inspected.
