ASTM A479/A479M-06A

ASTM A479/A479M-06a is a standard specification that covers hot- and cold-finished stainless steel bars, including forged and annealed types, intended for use in pressure vessels and high-temperature structural components. This specification is widely applied across petrochemical, food processing, marine, and pharmaceutical industries.

A New designations established in accordance with Practice E 527 and SAE J 1086 published jointly by ASTM and SAE. See ASTM DS–56C, available from ASTM.

ASTM A479 chemical composition

ASTM A479 304 stainless steel contains approximately 18–20% chromium, 8–11% nickel, ≤0.08% carbon, along with small amounts of manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur, providing excellent corrosion resistance and formability.

What is the difference between ASTM A479 and A276?

A479 is for bars used in pressure vessels and high-temperature applications, while A276 is for general-purpose structural use and does not include high-temperature or pressure vessel requirements.

Is ASTM A479 suitable for welding?

Yes. Especially in low-carbon grades (e.g., 304L, 316L), A479 materials are suitable for welding applications due to minimal risk of intergranular corrosion.

What stainless grades are included in ASTM A479?

Grades include 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 904L, and duplex stainless steels like UNS S31803 and S32205.
