What is the difference between 1.4541 and 1.4404 stainless steel pipes?
Leave a message
When selecting stainless steel pipes for demanding environments, especially in chemical processing, food industry, or high-temperature systems, buyers often compare EN 1.4541 (AISI 321) and EN 1.4404 (AISI 316L). While both are austenitic stainless steels, they offer distinct advantages depending on the application.

1.4541 Vs1.4404 Stainless Steel:
| Grade | EN 1.4541 | EN 1.4404 |
|---|---|---|
| AISI | 321 | 316L |
| UNS | S32100 | S31603 |
| Alloying | Cr-Ni + Titanium stabilized | Cr-Ni-Mo, low-carbon |
What is the difference between 1.4541 and 1.4404 stainless steel?
1. Corrosion Resistance
1.4404 /316L SS Round Pipe has superior resistance to chlorides and acids due to its molybdenum (Mo ~2.0–2.5%) content. It performs better in marine, saltwater, and aggressive chemical environments.
1.4541 / 321 SS Round Pipe provides good corrosion resistance in mild to moderate environments, but lacks molybdenum, making it less suitable for chloride-rich conditions.
2. High Temperature Performance
1.4541 stainless seamless pipe is titanium-stabilized, which prevents carbide precipitation during welding or high-heat exposure. It is ideal for continuous operation up to 850°C.
1.4404 stainless seamless pipe can resist intermittent heat up to around 870°C, but long-term exposure above 450°C may lead to sensitization and corrosion.
3. Weldability
Both grades are weldable using standard methods (TIG/MIG), but:
1.4541 SS Thick Wall Pipedoesn't require post-weld heat treatment due to Ti stabilization.
1.4404 SS Thick Wall Pipe, with its low carbon content (≤0.03%), also resists intergranular corrosion, but may require more care when used in thick sections or high-temp zones.
Which is more expensive: 321 or 316L stainless pipe?
In general, 316L stainless steel pipe is more expensive than 321 stainless steel pipe, primarily due to its higher molybdenum content, which enhances corrosion resistance-especially in chloride-rich environments.
Can 1.4541 stainless steel be used for heat exchangers?
| Application Type | 1.4541 (321) | 1.4404 (316L) |
|---|---|---|
| Heat exchanger tubes | ✅ Excellent | ⚠ Limited if above 450°C |
| Chemical piping (non-chloride) | ✅ Good | ✅ Excellent |
| Seawater/marine piping | ❌ Not recommended | ✅ Ideal |
| Welded furnace components | ✅ Excellent | ⚠ Risk of sensitization |
| Food & beverage piping | ✅ Acceptable | ✅ Preferred (hygienic, corrosion) |
