What is the equivalent grades of steel X10CrNi18-8 (1.4310)?
Leave a message
X10CrNi18-8, also known as EN 1.4310, is an austenitic stainless steel grade commonly used for high-strength applications such as springs, clips, washers, and precision components. It is especially known for its ability to achieve very high mechanical strength through cold working, while maintaining good corrosion resistance.

Equivalent Grades of X10CrNi18-8 (1.4310)
| Standard | Equivalent Grade |
|---|---|
| AISI/ASTM | AISI 301 (work-hardened grade) |
| JIS (Japan) | SUS301 |
| GB (China) | 1Cr17Ni7 (partially comparable) |
| ISO | X10CrNi18-8 |
| BS (UK) | 301S21 / 301S31 |
| AFNOR (France) | Z10CN18-09 |
Note: While AISI 301 and EN 1.4310 are often used interchangeably, slight differences in chemical composition and work hardening behavior may affect their final properties in demanding applications.

Is X10CrNi18-8 (1.4310) Magnetic?
In its annealed condition, 1.4310 is non-magnetic, like most austenitic stainless steels.
However, after cold working, it can become partially magnetic due to martensitic transformation, which is typical for AISI 301-type grades.
Physical Properties Of EN 1.4310 Stainless Steel
Density: 7.9 g/cm³
Tensile Strength (cold worked): up to 2000 MPa
Hardness: HV up to 600 (depending on cold work level)
Corrosion Resistance: Good in mildly corrosive environments
Work Hardening: Excellent
Weldability: Moderate (not stabilized; risk of intergranular corrosion without post-weld treatment)
Applications of X10CrNi18-8 / AISI 301
Industrial and automotive spring components
Watch and electronic device parts
Precision stamped and bent parts
Fasteners, washers, retaining rings
Food and medical-grade mechanical parts
Is 1.4310 the same as 1.4301 (304)?
No. While both are austenitic stainless steels, 1.4310 (301) has lower nickel and higher strength due to its cold workability. It's designed for different performance needs.
What is the difference between SUS301 and AISI 301?
They are functionally equivalent. SUS301 is the Japanese designation under JIS, while AISI 301 is the American standard.
Can X10CrNi18-8 be used for welding?
Yes, but it is not stabilized, so post-weld heat treatment or low carbon alternatives (like 1.4306/1.4307) are preferred to avoid intergranular corrosion.
