What is the Difference Between Duplex 2205 and 316?
 

Differences in organizational structure:
2205 is a duplex stainless steel, composed of about 50% austenite + 50% ferrite, and the two-phase structure works synergistically; 316 is a single-phase austenitic stainless steel, with a stable austenitic structure at room temperature.

 

Corrosion resistance:
2205 stainless steel has stronger resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion, especially in high-chlorine environments (such as concentrated seawater, high-temperature chlorine-containing media), far exceeding 316, and the pitting resistance equivalent (PREN≈32) is significantly higher than 316 (PREN≈25).
316 stainless steel is resistant to general atmosphere, weak acid and alkali, and medium-chlorine environments (such as ordinary seawater, food processing), but its corrosion resistance is not as good as 2205 in extreme high-chlorine or high-temperature and high-pressure corrosion environments.

 

Processing performance:
316 stainless steel has better plasticity, and is easier to process in welding, bending, stamping, etc.; 2205 requires greater external force due to its high strength, and heat input needs to be controlled during welding to prevent embrittlement caused by excessive ferrite.

How to Weld 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel?

Welding 2205 requires care to preserve its duplex structure:

Filler Metal: Use ER2209 or equivalent

Shielding Gas: Pure Argon or Ar/N2 blends; sometimes Ar+2% O₂ for TIG

Heat Input: Control heat input (0.5–2.5 kJ/mm) to avoid sigma phase formation

Interpass Temperature: Keep below 150°C

Post-Weld Cleaning: Pickling or passivation improves corrosion performance
